Bringing the Colonial Era to Life

Colonial Set These centuries-old silver coins are important pieces of American history. Often seen in museums, coin galleries and private collections, these precious coins are extremely scarce today. Thanks to a recent discovery, we've assembled a fabulous three-coin set of these treasures of early American history, and we're making them available to you!

Brazil Silver 960 Reis Dollar - Struck in Brazil under the authority of colonial power Portugal and legal tender in America until 1857, the unique Silver 960 Reis Dollar was worth as much as a Spanish Silver 8 Reales. That's no surprise - since it WAS a Spanish Silver 8 Reales! If all this sounds confusing, imagine how early-American merchants felt about coins like this! The Brazil Silver 960 Reis Dollar was actually a Spanish Silver 8 Reales overstruck with a Protuguese design. The Portuguese were in control of Brazil at this time and had no silver coinage of their own. They overstruck a globe on the obverse while the reverse overstrike was a crown above a shield with the date and denomination. The monetary equivalent of a Spanish 8 Reales or a U.S. silver dollar, the coins in this set were struck between 1810-1818 and are in Very Fine condition.

French Silver Ecu - Long before American GIs fought their way through the Argonne Forest in World War I and splashed ashore on the beaches of Normandy in World War II, French soldiers were helping the newly formed United States achieve a victory in the Revolutionary War. Not only did French soldiers circulate in the colonies, French coinage circulated as well. Among the most widely-accepted legal tender coins in the colonies was the French Silver Ecu. This large silver coin - it was actually worth about $1.10 - circulated in Colonial America before and after the Revolutionary War. The name Ecu means "shield," and was so-named because of the French Coat of Arms on the coin's reverse. The coins we have were struck from 1715-1791 and are in Very Fine Condition.

Spanish 8 Reales Portrait Dollar - Spanish silver dollars were so trusted and accepted by the American public that they remained official legal tender until 1857 and continued to be used out West into the 1870s. When you hold these coins, you will actually be holding American history in the palm of your hands! Could these coins have passed through the hands of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Betsy Ross...? Who knows! Each coin bears either the portrait of Charles III or Charles the IV, the Spanish kings that appeared on this coin from 1772 to 1808. This coin was the workhorse silver dollar of early America. Because of their high silver content, many of these coins were later melted down to help produce U.S. trade dollars, and some even ended up in Morgan Silver Dollars! What makes these coins even more magnificent is that they've all been graded in Very Fine condition - incredible considering their age and popularity as circulated coinage!
