On February 12th, 2009 a momentous event occurred in Hodgenville, Kentucky. On the 200th Anniversary of Lincoln’s birth, thousands of collectors streamed into town to obtain the Lincoln Birthplace Log Cabin Cent on the First Day of Issue. On that day, Hodgenville was the only place in the country where these commemorative cents were available.
If you were lucky enough to be there and then submitted your Lincolns to NGC for grading, they would have obtained the coveted “First Day of Issue” Label—but only if you could prove you obtained your coins on that single day. Maybe you couldn’t be there, but we were.
We sent our buyer on a mission to scoop up as many of these first day Lincolns as he could get his hands on. We submitted them to NGC for grading, and because we proved that we were on the spot when they were released, these coins received the coveted “First Day of Issue” label. As of May, 2009, very few of these First Day Coins have surfaced in NGC holders. ACT NOW, we expect these graded Lincoln pennies to be gone quickly!
