As World War II hero and president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower was one of the most popular and beloved leaders of the 20th century. It’s no wonder that when the U.S. mint was choosing a theme for its one and only commemorative silver dollar of 1990 that it selected Eisenhower. The ideal commemorative for the 100th anniversary of Eisenhower’s birth, the 90% silver coin depicts a unique overlapping double portrait of “Ike” to symbolize his roles as a military leader and president-statesman. The military portrait shows Eisenhower as a five-star general of the United States Army. The design was the work of Mint Engraver John Mercanti. The reverse design, created by Marcel Jovine, depicts a view of the Eisenhower home near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
