1958 Canadian Silver Dollar In some Indian cultures, the raven is regarded as a symbol of death. So when the 1958 Canadian Silver Dollar was released featuring a carved raven at the top of a totem pole, it became known as the “Death Dollar.” It was issued to commemorate the Founding of British Columbia as a British Colony and the 100th anniversary of the British Columbia Gold Rush — affectionately called the “Caribou Gold Rush” by old-timers. The design also features mountains looming in the background — appropriate since the province is almost wholly mountainous. The totem pole was selected as a theme because British Columbia is the only region in Canada where Native Americans constructed totem poles. This popular issue is considered a must-have among collectors.
