Two fifty-coin rolls of Hawaiian silver dimes were discovered in an old island plantation - most likely sitting in the same location for over 100 years. In 1883, the Kingdom of Hawaii under King Kalakaua petitioned the U.S. to strike coinage for the islands and the U.S. agreed. These scarce, one-year-only silver dimes featuring a portrait of the king were struck in limited quantities at the San Francisco Mint. When Hawaii became a territory in 1900, most of these coins were melted down, leaving very few available today. Scarce and highly desirable!
