Twenty cents today is a sum we are not used to. With a gallon of gas or milk both costing more than two dollars, 20¢ seems like an insignificant amount. But back in the Old West, where many things cost 10¢, the idea of a 20-cent piece was not a far-fetched idea. And, in fact, a 20-cent piece even circulated from 1875 to 1878!
The idea of a 20-cent piece was first proposed by Thomas Jefferson in 1783 as part of a monetary decimal system for coinage. The idea was rejected in 1792 in favor of the quarter-dollar.
These unique pieces of American history are all over 25 years old. Most circulated in the West where it was easier to make change for a 20-cent piece than a quarter. Only limited quantities are available and each comes in average Circulated condition.
