With coinage cut off from Northern mints and the New Orleans Mint shut down, the Confederacy relied on silver coinage struck in Mexico. Widely circulated and accepted in the South, this “Rebel” Silver Dollar aided significantly in the South’s economic survival. The obverse features the historic “Liberty Cap and Ray” design and on the reverse is the Mexican eagle. Struck in .903 fine silver, it is the same size as the Morgan Silver Dollar.
