These Spanish Half Reales Silver Dimes circulated so widely in colonial America that they ended up serving as the model for the silver dimes struck by the U.S. Mint until 1964. Because they often entered America from the south through New Orleans, they became known as picayunes—which means "Little Coins." These "dimes" were so popular they were legal tender all the way up to 1861! Struck between 1732 and 1825, we have assembled a type set of two coins, one showing the globe and the pillars of Hercules, the second showing a portrait of the King of Spain. Both coins are in good condition.
