More Water Than a Camel Could Drink!

1724-25 Le Chameau Silver Dollar

In 1725 the French battleship Le Chameau (The Camel) took on more water than she could handle and sunk to the bottom of the sea off Cape Breton Island in Canada. In her hold was a cargo of French Silver Dollars on their way to fuel commerce in the New World. Known as Ecus, these Silver Dollars were found and recovered in 1965. They picture Louis XV, King of France, and the Royal Arms and are certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
